Pregnancy Nausea Remedies
Morning sickness strikes about 50-85% of women in the first three months of pregnancy. Some never feel any symptoms; others feel it only in the morning while others can suffer all through the day. There are also a minority who actually feel nauseous throughout their pregnancy. Although it seems like most will have this rather unwelcome side effect of having a baby, there are, you’ll be happy to hear, various pregnancy nausea remedies open to you.
A Few Remedies
Many women are struck with sickness – either just the feeling or actual vomiting – as soon as they wake up in the morning. A good way to combat this is to take a few dry crackers, biscuits or perhaps cereal to bed with you the night before and put them by your bed. This way, as soon as you wake up you can nibble on this dry, easily digestable food and then lie down again for about 20 minutes or until the sickness passes.
Another good food which is meant to help the symptoms of sickness is ginger, so it may help to take a few ginger biscuits around with you in your bag – then when nausea strikes, you are always ready.
If the thought of any food upsets you then try to take in deep breaths of fresh air. This is not only calming but can also help to settle an upset stomach.
This is definitely not the time to be worrying about what you eat. Forget fad diets and avoiding foods you’d like to eat but don’t. Eat whatever and whenever the mood takes you – it will be beneficial for you and your baby. If anything, eat more starchy foods like potatoes as these will keep your blood sugar levels high and your stomach feeling full thus reducing the feelings of nausea.
If certain smells bring on the sickness, like curry or frying sausages, then avoid them at all costs. This may sound obvious but keeping away from them will reduce those unwanted sickness symptoms. Ban them from the house – those around you are bound to understand- take a different route to work so you don’t walk by that café on the corner, or if it is impossible to avoid them then put a few drops of essential lemon oil on your handkerchief and inhale that when faced with inescapable odours.
Try to stick to plain and simple food instead of hot and spicy. The latter are harder to digest and can upset an unsettled stomach. That curry for dinner may have been a nice idea but you may live to regret it.
Above all, remember to keep hydrated. If you are being sick then you will be losing a lot of fluid. Try to drink lots of water throughout the day, not in massive gulps as if you’re someone trying to haul a pint of beer in one go, but in manageable sips every-so-often. You need to stay hydrated for your own and your baby’s sake.
These pregnancy nausea remedies should help get through the trying time of morning sickness and also help you get back to being the glowing mum-to-be you really are.
